Project Intelligence Agencies

The powerful often use them to spy on their enemies – and almost as often, to eliminate their foes. We seek the operatives of the secret intelligence agencies and give an insight into the second oldest trade in the world.

Our investigations focus on the roles of the German Intelligence and Security Agencies in international economical and political relations, as well as crisis areas and warzones, including the Iraq war or the international war on terror.

We exposed how the BND, the German Foreign Intelligence Service, provided the US-military in Bagdad with strike target coordinates, even though the German government pledged to stay out of the Iraq war.

We also published several in-depth investigations into the ties between the BND and the government in Syria in 2008. We examined the case of Murat Kurnaz, the German national detained in Guantánamo for several years even though German authorities had determined his innocence.

A selection of stern stories on Intelligence Agencies in German.
