Zwei Wochen nachdem seine Frau Chrissy Teigen eine Fehlgeburt erlitten hat, trat John Legend bei den Billboard Music Awards auf. Seine Performance der Ballade "Never Break" lieferte den emotionalen Moment des Abends.
Im Juni veröffentlichte John Legend sein aktuelles Album "Bigger Love". Der letzte Titel darauf ist ein Liebeslied an seine Frau Chrissy Teigen: "Never Break" - "Wir werden niemals auseinandergehen". Diesen Titel wählte der Sänger für seinen Auftritt bei den Billboard Music Awards am Mittwochabend im Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles aus.

Als die Aufzeichnung von Legends Performance abgespielt wurde, stockte vielen Zuschauern der Atem. Denn es ist erst zwei Wochen her, dass Legend und Teigen ihr ungeborenes Baby durch eine Fehlgeburt verloren. Jetzt saß der 41-Jährige im weißen Smoking an einem schwarzen Konzertflügel. Bevor er anfing, hauchte er "Das ist für Chrissy" ins Mikrofon. Dann startete er seinen Song: "Never Break". Der durch das tragische Familienereignis eine ganz neue Wendung bekam. "We got a good thing, babe. Whenever life is hard we'll never lose our way" lauten die ersten Zeilen des Liedes: "Wir haben eine gutes Ding, Baby. Wann immer das Leben schwer ist, wir werden uns nie verirren".

John Legend rührt Kelly Clarkson
Die Botschaft ging den Zuschauern der Preisverleihung nahe. Gastgeberin Kelly Clarkson sagte mit Blick auf Legend und Teigen: "Unsere Herzen gehen zu euch beiden in dieser sehr schwierigen Zeit und ich bin dankbar, dass ihr weiterhin euer Licht und Ihr Talent mit uns allen teilt." Nachdem die vorab aufgezeichnete Darbietung abgespielt worden war, ergänzte Clarkson: "John, das war so schön … All meine Liebe zu dir und Chrissy."
John Legend ist seit 2013 mit dem Model Chrissy Teigen verheiratet. Das Paar hat zwei Kinder, eine Tochter und einen Sohn, und lässt seine Fans via Instagram an ihrem Familienleben ausgiebig teilhaben. Im US-Wahlkampf unterstützt Legend die Demokraten und trat im August auf dem Nominierungsparteitag auf.
