Nach dem ein Hai einen Bodyboarder vor La Réunion tötete, hat Kelly Slater zum gezielten Töten der Tiere aufgefordert. Der eigentlich für sein Engagement im Meeresschutz bekannte Surf-Star bekam dafür viel Gegenwind.
US-Surflegende Kelly Slater hat mit einem Aufruf zum Töten von Haien für Wirbel gesorgt. Nach einer tödlichen Hai-Attacke auf einen Wassersportler vor der Insel La Réunion schrieb der elffache Surfweltmeister auf der Instagram-Seite eines anderen Surfers: "Ich werde mich damit nicht beliebt machen, aber auf La Réunion muss es wirklich ein Abschlachten (von Haien) geben, und zwar jeden Tag."
"Es gibt dort im Ozean eindeutig ein Ungleichgewicht", fuhr Slater fort, der eigentlich für sein Engagement zum Schutz der Weltmeere bekannt ist. "Wenn es auf der ganzen Welt eine solche Häufigkeit von Attacken gäbe, würde niemand die Ozeane nutzen und buchstäblich Millionen von Menschen würden so sterben."

Auf der Instagram-Seite des französischen Surfers Jérémy Florès, auf der Slater seinen Kommentar gepostet hatte, folgte eine erregte Diskussion über das Thema. Während viele Internetnutzer Slaters Ansicht teilten, gab es auch entschiedenen Widerspruch.
"Das ist eine Tragödie, aber abschlachten ist keine Antwort", schrieb eine Nutzerin. Andere wiesen darauf hin, dass der vor La Réunion im Indischen Ozean getötete Bodyboarder an einem Küstenabschnitt unterwegs war, der wegen der Gefahr von Hai-Attacken für Wassersportler gesperrt war.

Ein Hai hatte dem 26-jährigen Bodyboarder am Dienstag in den Oberschenkel gebissen, dabei eine Arterie durchtrennt und ihn so tödlich verletzt. Es war bereits die zwanzigste Hai-Attacke in dem östlich von Madagaskar gelegenen französischen Überseegebiet seit 2011. Acht dieser Angriffe endeten tödlich.
