Mit gerade mal 15 Jahren ist die US-Wissenschaftlerin Gitanjali Rao schon sehr erfolgreich. Das "Time"-Magazine hat sie zum "Kind des Jahres" gekürt. Rao setzt Technologie ein, um gegen verunreinigtes Trinkwasser, Opioidabhängigkeit und Cyberbullying vorzugehen.
Das "Time"-Magazine hat neben der "Person des Jahres" erstmalig das "Kind des Jahres" gekürt. Die Wahl des Komitees ist auf die 15-jährige Gitanjali Rao aus Denver im US-Bundesstaat Colorado gefallen. Die junge Wissenschaftlerin hat mehrere Innovationen erfunden. Darunter ein Gerät, das vor Blei im Trinkwasser warnt und eine App, die durch künstliche Intelligenz sogenanntes Cyberbullying, Mobbing im Internet, erkennt.

Rao setzte sich gegen vier weitere Finalisten durch
Rao gehörte zu 5000 in den USA ansässigen Nominierten. Ein Komitee, bestehend aus jungen Menschen und dem Komiker und Fernsehmoderator Trevor Noah, wählte fünf Finalisten aus. Gegen die setzte sich Rao in der Endrunde erfolgreich durch. Die fünf Finalisten sollen in einer Fernsehsendung am kommenden Freitag vorgestellt werden.
In einem Interview mit Schauspielerin und Menschenrechtsaktivistin Angelina Jolie sagt Rao: "Ich sehe nicht wie ein typischer Wissenschaftler aus. Die Forscher, die ich im Fernsehen sehe, sind ältere, meist weiße Männer." Rao hofft, andere dazu inspirieren zu können, Ideen zur "Lösung der Probleme der Welt" zu entwickeln. "Wenn ich es schaffe", sagt sie bescheiden, "kann es jeder schaffen."
