Im Jahre 1606 führte der Engländer William Brewster eine Gruppe von radikalen Separatisten, die sich im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert von der heimischen Kirche gelöst hatten, in die Niederlanden, um der religiösen Verfolgung zu entgehen. Ein gutes Jahrzehnt später entschloss sich die Gruppe, die Strapazen einer langen Seefahrt auf sich zu nehmen und nach Amerika auszuwandern. Am 16. September 1620 gingen die »Pilgrim Fathers« als Teil einer Gruppe von 101 Männern, Frauen und Kindern an Bord des Dreimasters »Mayflower«.
66 Tage später landete die Mayflower bei Cape Cod im heutigen Massachusetts, wo sie mit der Kolonie Plymouth die erste dauerhafte europäische Siedlung in Neuengland gründeten. Die Pilgerväter stellten zwar nur eine Minderheit unter den Passagieren und Besatzungsmitgliedern des Schiffes, aber sie setzten jenen »Mayflower Vertrag« vom 11. November 1620 auf, der als frühestes Dokument amerikanischer Selbstverwaltung und des Willens, ihr Gemeinwesen mit selbst gegebenen gerechten und gleichen Gesetzen zu ordnen, in die amerikanische Geschichte eingegangen ist.
»In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.
