13 US-Soldaten verloren beim Selbstmordanschlag ihr Leben, eine davon war Marineinfanteristin Nicole Gee. Kurz zuvor hatte die junge Frau noch auf Instagram geschrieben, sie liebe ihren Job.
Sie war in Kabul, Afghanistan, um Menschen vor den Taliban zu retten und sie zu evakuieren. Ein Job, der die Kalifornierin Nicole Gee erfüllte. Gee war am Flughafen Kabul im Dienst, als sich vor dem Tor des Geländes am Donnerstag ein Selbstmordattentäter in die Luft sprengte. Sie ist eine der US-Soldatinnen und -Soldaten, die bei dem Anschlag ums Leben kamen.

Ein vom US-Verteidigungsministerium verbreitetes Foto zeigt die 23-Jährige wenige Tage vor dem verheerenden Anschlag, der nicht nur 13 Soldaten, sondern auch dutzende Zivilisten das Leben kostete. Darauf hält Gee schützend ein afghanisches Baby auf dem Arm. Auf Instagram schrieb sie zu dem rührenden Bild: "Ich liebe meinen Job." Das gleiche Bild wurde am 21. August auf dem Twitter-Account des US-Verteidigungsministeriums gepostet.

Laut der Behörde war Gee einer Einheit der Marineinfanteristen ("Marines") aus dem Bundesstaat North Carolina zugeordnet.
"Gefallene Helden"
Auf ihrem Instagram -Profil postete die junge Frau regelmäßig Eindrücke aus ihrem Berufsleben. Erst Anfang August wurde sie in Kuwait zum Feldwebel ernannt, veröffentlichte ein Bild von sich, auf dem sie stolz die Urkunde in den Händen hält. Das letzte Foto, das die Soldatin postete, zeigt sie neben wartenden Menschen, die von der US-Armee aus Afghanistan evakuiert werden.
Neben Nicole Gee verstarben bei dem Anschlag noch zehn weitere Marines. "Diese gefallenen Helden sind dem Ruf gefolgt, sich in Gefahr zu begeben, um anderen zu helfen. Wir sind stolz auf ihren Dienst und tief betrübt über ihren Verlust", hieß es auf dem Twitter -Account des offiziellen Kommandanten der Marines, David H. Berger.
